Friends of Liberia’s Endowment Funds are held at the Greater Washington Community Foundation

Why did FOL create these endowment funds? Endowments are funds that an organization sets aside in investments where they can accrue value to ensure the long-term financial stability of the organization. It doesn’t mean that FOL can exist without its Annual Fund, but it means that our endowment funds can help us plan for a more robust future that will help provide us financial security and flexibility. It is the hope with this stability and flexibility, FOL will be better able to fulfill our mission and programming in Liberia.

Endowment funds can receive gifts/donations from living donors, as well as from estate gifts, trusts, wills and other forms of legacy giving. Please take a look at the two funds that FOL has set up and consider a gift today.

The Friends of Liberia Legacy Circle Fund

The primary mission of the Nonprofit and purpose of the Fund is: To connect and engage interested parties in Liberia to positively affect Liberia and Liberians through education, economic, and humanitarian programs and through advocacy efforts.

Friends of Liberia Emergency Fund

This fund, will help Liberia in times of emergency such as Ebola, Covid, Civil War, environmental destruction, natural disasters, or such that provide challenges to daily living in Liberia.

Legacy Circle

After one of our members let us know that she had included Friends of Liberia in her will, we noted that both founding “baby boomer” members and young, smart new members are more frequently thinking about what means the most in their lives, and how they might continue important work far into the future. In response, the FOL Board decided to create the Legacy Circle, composed of those who believe in the work of Friends of Liberia, want it to continue, and have decided to include FOL in their Estate planning.

The Legacy Circle will include many who supported our projects in Education, Health and Small Grants in Liberia, and programs to advocate for and educate about Liberia with global audiences. We hope the Legacy Circle will also include many who do not feel able to financially support these FOL programs now, but would like to make a plan to do so in the future.

The simplest way to leave a legacy gift is to make Friends of Liberia a beneficiary in your will, life insurance policy, IRA, or stock fund, either for a specific amount or a percentage of the Estate. You would use our official address and Tax I.D.:

A bequest can always be changed or withdrawn during your lifetime if situations change.

States permit various types of wills, but always encourage them as a way to insure that the personal desires of an individual for distribution or special conditions are respected. The following suggestions are only guidelines and should be adapted by your attorney to fit your situation:

Sample Bequest of Specific Amount

“I give, devise, and bequeath $_______ to the non-profit Friends of Liberia, TAX I.D. #52-1541798.”

Sample Bequest of Remainder of Estate or Portion Thereof

“I give, devise, and bequeath to the Friends of Liberia, TAX I.D. #52-1541798, all [or state the fraction or percentage] of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal.”

As a small non-profit organization without any paid staff, Friends of Liberia is not operating an endowment or investing funds for growth at this time. Funds received will be used for our project-related expenses, which we will be happy to detail for you each year, or you can also designate a particular use for your gift, such as the Family Literacy Initiative, Small Grants, or the upcoming Health Project.

We realize that “Planned Giving” is a personal matter. If you choose to make a bequest to FOL, we encourage you to let us know when that has been done so that we may have the opportunity to express our appreciation. If you give us permission to use your name, we will include you in our Legacy Circle thank you page, coming soon.
