Friends of Liberia Policy for Small Grants

Purpose: Friends of Liberia (FOL) invites proposals for grants that support education, social, economic and humanitarian programs in Liberia.

Eligibility:

1. Only nonprofit organizations working independently of the government of Liberia are eligible to apply.
2. The organization must be officially registered by the Liberian government
as a nonprofit organization or be partnered with such organization.
3. Preference will be given to organizations based in Liberia.
4. An organization may submit no more than one grant application per year.
5. FOL will not award a grant that is the exclusive source of support for the program or project proposed.
6. FOL generally will not accept a grant application based upon a program or project for which a previous grant was awarded. (FOL, at its initiative, may encourage a grantee to apply for a continuation grant.)

Criteria for award:

The following factors will be taken into consideration:

  1. Has diverse Liberian membership
  2. Respects talents and skills of Liberians
  3. Responds to the needs of Liberians
  4. Builds community awareness in all parts of Liberia
  5. Builds capacity for self-reliance
  6. Is sustainable
  7. Promotes entrepreneurship/self help
  8. Engages in micro-financing
  9. Complements the educational effort
  10. Helps an existing organization
  11. Does not substitute for inherently governmental functions
  12. Fills a niche in development needs
  13. Leverages funds with other funding sources/partners

Amount of Awards:

      Grants up to $2000.

Application procedures:

      1. Since grants will be awarded at semi-annual board meetings in the March and September, grant proposals must be received by FOL by April 1 and October 1, respectively, in order to be considered.

      3. The application must include all of the following:
      a. Information demonstrating
      i. Familiarity with Liberia
      ii. Capability to administer the program, including background and experience
      iii.Certification that it is currently registered as a nonprofit organization in Liberia by a Ministry or by the Liberian Business Registry.
    b. An executive summary not to exceed one page
      c. A thorough explanation of the proposed program, not to exceed five pages, including
      i. Goal
      ii. Objectives and the means by which they will be both measured and evaluated
      iii. Timetable: Activities or purchases funded by a Small Grant must begin or be made after the grant is awarded (July 1 for applications submitted by April 1 or January 1 for applications submitted by October 1).
      iv. Project staff and material resources to be utilized
      v. Detailed budget, including non-FOL funds, and in-kind contributions. Indicate which specific expenses in the budget would be funded by the grant from FOL.
      d. Names, titles and e-mail addresses of both the responsible officer and an alternate responsible officer of the organization
      e. Mailing address of the organization
