The year was 1847…
The American Colonization Society had controlled the colony in Liberia since 1822. But now, a small group of settlers were ratifying their own Declaration of Independence and declaring the Republic of Liberia free!
Among this group was the writer, Hilary Teague, who took inspiration from America’s Declaration of Independence to write the country’s own. He was born free in Virginia, and worked as a merchant, journalist, and politician. Teague became Liberia’s first Secretary of State.
Also a part of this auspicious group was the soon-to-be first president of Liberia: Joseph Jenkins Roberts. Roberts was born free in the state of Virginia, and settled in Liberia in 1829. On January 3, 1848, he became Liberia’s first president.
The United States refused to acknowledge Liberia’s Independence until February 5, 1862 – nearly 15 years later.
