Our partner, WE-CARE has taken great steps to ensure the continuation of the Family Literacy Initiative (FLI), despite the trying times of the COVID-19 restrictions. You can read more about their efforts in an article by Bush Chicken, a Liberian news outlet, founded by FOL Member Jefferson Krua.
We at Friends of Liberia, as mentioned in the article, helped this process along by filling the need for food and materials that WE-CARE expressed. The purchase of the food and materials was made possible by a generous donation from Sally Gosline Humphrey, an RPCV (Returned Peace Corps Volunteer) who served in Liberia from 1963-65. While she generously agreed to fund this project, the food and supplies can only last so long.
WE-CARE was able to distribute these supplies to over 200 families in April 2020. The supplies were set to last until June of this year, which means they will be running out soon!
As WE-CARE’s coordinator Yvonne Capehart Weah said in the interview with Bush Chicken, “Our aim is to keep these children learning to minimize the loss on gains in learning outcomes during this lockdown. We know that the children between ages 3-5, their brains are developing so rapidly. But if they are not engaged with learning materials, they tend to lose out on those gains.”
Help us continue our support of the Family Literacy Initiative, and these families by donating below! You can specify your donation for the Education Committee, or FLI, or it can go to the general fund at Friends of Liberia. Remember every little bit helps!
