Mark Toner served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia from 19856 to 1988. He retired as a career member of the U.S. State Department Senior Foreign Service. Most recently, he was the U.S. Ambassador to Liberia. Prior to that, he held the position of Acting Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Global Public Affairs. His distinguished career also includes serving as Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, Deputy Spokesperson and Acting Spokesperson for the State Department under three successive Secretaries of State, and Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.
