OAK (Opportunities for African Kids) has invited the Family Literacy Initiative to Peter Town to conduct workshops for teachers. This is also WE-CARE’s first expansion into Bong County.

OAK  is a non-profit started by Sue Dee Shenk, an RPCV who served in Liberia in 1972.   Since its inception in 2012, OAK built a six-room school in Peter Town with teacher offices, a library, and latrines. The school is wired with solar power that provides lighting in the evening.   The library has bookcases filled with more than 1,000 books, and the school building has teacher desks.

Teacher housing with solar panels, a bathroom, and a kitchen area were also constructed, along with a 1,500 square foot community center with offices and guest rooms for various events.  There are over 100 students who have new uniforms and two new wells were dug for the community.

Now that OAK has accomplished all of this, WE-CARE and FOL will take over working with the community and the school will be transferred to the government.
