Dr. Paul E. Mertens, age 88, of St. Paul, passed away on March 19. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 22 at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church of Minnehaha Falls, 5212 41st Ave S, Minneapolis. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.
In 1963, he traveled to Zorzor in Lofa County to serve as Physician, and later as Medical Director, at Curran Lutheran Hospital. Dr. Mertens ultimately spent 18 years working in Liberia as a physician and public health professional through the Lutheran Church and the U.S. Agency for International Development (U.S.A.I.D.).
Paul was on the Friends of Liberia Ebola and COVID Relief Task Forces, helping to prepare shipments of medical supplies and equipment to Liberia at Global Health Ministries in Minneapolis.
